The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a warning to Yoruba activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, cautioning him against taking unilateral action against bandits in the South West region without the involvement of military forces and other security agencies…….CONTINUE READING
This warning comes in response to Igboho’s recent call to his supporters, urging them not to wait for government intervention but to take measures against Fulani herders who are reportedly disrupting local farmers’ access to their farmland.
Igboho proposed the establishment of a regional security force to protect the people of the Southwest from the recurring attacks by Fulani herders. He expressed willingness to engage with the federal government to discuss lawful approaches to address the issue.
In an interview with reporters, the spokesman for Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, emphasized that any action taken by Igboho without the involvement of security agencies would be deemed unconstitutional.
Buba affirmed the military’s readiness to collaborate with Igboho to combat the menace of killer herdsmen and bandits threatening farmers and commuters in the South West. He commended Igboho’s courage and assured him of the military’s willingness to cooperate if his intentions aim to enhance national security.
While acknowledging Igboho’s statements, Buba stressed the importance of respecting the constitution and the role of the armed forces in maintaining law and order.
He stated, “If what he said is to make the situation better, he is welcomed, but if what he is saying is that we should disregard the armed forces of Nigeria, definitely, he is out of line because that is against Nigeria’s constitution.”
