AAU ASUU Reports Loss Of Over 25 Members Due To Non-Payment Of Salaries....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Ambrose Alli University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) revealed on Thursday that it has suffered a significant loss of over 25 members since 2022 due to financial hardships stemming from the alleged non-payment of salaries for the past 26 months…….CONTINUE READING
According to Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele, the union’s chairman at the Ekpoma branch of Ambrose Alli University, the situation has been dire not only for academic staff but also for non-academic staff members who are facing similar circumstances.
Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, Onogbosele lamented the severe financial challenges faced by university employees and cautioned that failure to address the current situation could lead to industrial crises, unrest, and an unfavorable university environment.
He highlighted the absence of a governing council or substantive primary executives since 2021 as indicative of the institution’s worst kind of maladministration. Onogbosele further alleged that the university is grappling with its worst funding crisis, evident in the selective payment of salaries and the complete denial of salaries to numerous staff members for up to 26 months since January 2022. He also claimed that staff members were being subjected to victimization, intimidation, and severe hardship.
“This present executive came on board on August 3, 2021, and since that period to date, we have lost not less than 25 members for my record,” Onogbosele stated, emphasizing that the losses primarily affected academic staff.
He refuted claims by the Special Intervention Team/Government that the university did not owe its staff any salaries, branding it as a mere distraction from the harsh reality of the staff’s suffering. Onogbosele concluded by asserting that the situation had tragically resulted in the deaths of several university workers, including professors, who lacked the means to sustain themselves due to the non-payment of salaries.
