Article: In a move that could potentially reshape Nigeria’s construction landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed major cement manufacturers, including Dangote and BUA, to slash their prices back to previous levels. The directive comes amidst growing concerns over the affordability of essential building materials and its impact on the government’s ambitious housing and infrastructure plans.
The announcement, conveyed by Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, following his inspection of the BUA cement factory in Sokoto, underscores the government’s determination to ensure accessibility to crucial resources for its development agenda.
During a recent meeting with cement industry leaders, President Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for affordability, aligning with the administration’s commitment to facilitating housing and infrastructure projects across the nation.
Minister Umahi, echoing the President’s sentiment, urged manufacturers to comply with the directive, emphasizing its crucial role in realizing the government’s vision of expansive housing programs and robust infrastructure development.
The minister also commended BUA for its efforts, particularly the completion of its 5th production line, which promises to significantly boost the company’s capacity to meet market demands.
Senator Aminu Tambuwal, accompanying Minister Umahi, hailed BUA’s management for their efficiency and commitment to quality standards. However, he urged the company to ensure that increased production translates into tangible benefits for consumers, aligning with the administration’s goal of affordable housing for all.
In response, BUA’s Managing Director, Engineer Yusuf Binji, expressed confidence that the commencement of operations on the 5th line would lead to a substantial increase in cement production, ultimately driving down market prices and improving accessibility for Nigerians.
However, amidst these developments, a looming threat hangs over the industry. The federal government has hinted at the possibility of reopening borders if cement manufacturers fail to comply with the directive, signaling its willingness to take drastic measures to ensure affordability and accessibility of essential commodities.
As stakeholders await further developments, the fate of Nigeria’s construction sector hangs in the balance, with the government’s resolve to prioritize the needs of its citizens facing off against the interests of major industry players.
