House Of Representatives Advocates Compulsory Drug Testing For Secondary School Students....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In response to the escalating cases of substance abuse among young Nigerians, the House of Representatives has proposed mandatory drug testing for secondary school students nationwide. The decision, reached during a session on Thursday, stems from a motion titled “Need to introduce mandatory drug testing for secondary school students in Nigeria,” presented by Olanrewaju Oshun, the representative of Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.
Oshun emphasized the crucial role of youths in the socio-economic development of the country and underscored the necessity for government intervention to safeguard their well-being and enhance their contributions to national progress. He expressed concern over the growing prevalence of substance abuse among young people, citing studies revealing alarming statistics, such as one in every four students aged between 15-19 years abusing drugs.
According to Oshun, substances like codeine-containing syrup and tramadol have become rampant among secondary school students, surpassing even cannabis in usage. To address this issue, he proposed the implementation of Random Student Drug Testing, a preventive measure aimed at deterring drug use and identifying students in need of assistance to remain drug-free.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged the collaboration of the Federal Ministries of Education and Health to develop a comprehensive mandatory drug testing program for secondary school students across Nigeria. Additionally, it called upon the National Orientation Agency and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to intensify awareness campaigns on substance abuse among students nationwide.
To ensure the effective implementation of these measures, the House mandated the Committees on Basic Education and Services, as well as Healthcare Services, to oversee compliance and provide a report within four weeks for further legislative action.
The initiative reflects the House’s commitment to addressing the pressing issue of substance abuse among young Nigerians and underscores the importance of preventive measures and collaborative efforts in safeguarding the well-being of the youth population.
