- Respiratory System: Smoking damages the lungs and airways, leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and an increased risk of respiratory infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. - Cardiovascular System: Smoking significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, stroke, heart attack, and peripheral artery disease. It damages blood vessels, reduces blood flow, and contributes to the formation of blood clots, leading to narrowed arteries and increased blood pressure.
- Cancer: Smoking is a major cause of various types of cancer, not only lung cancer but also cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, bladder, cervix, colon, and rectum. It contains carcinogens that damage DNA and promote the growth of cancer cells.
- Immune System: Smoking weakens the immune system, making smokers more susceptible to infections and slower to heal from wounds. It impairs the function of immune cells, reduces antibody production, and increases inflammation throughout the body.
- Reproductive System: Smoking can have adverse effects on reproductive health in both men and women. In men, it can lead to erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm quality, and infertility. In women, it can decrease fertility, increase the risk of pregnancy complications (such as ectopic pregnancy and preterm birth), and harm fetal development during pregnancy.
- Skin: Smoking accelerates skin aging and contributes to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. It reduces blood flow to the skin, depriving it of oxygen and essential nutrients, and damages collagen and elastin fibers, leading to premature aging.
- Oral Health: Smoking is a major risk factor for oral health problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and oral cancer. It weakens the gums’ ability to fight infections, reduces saliva production, and increases the buildup of plaque and tartar on teeth.
- Mental Health: There is a strong association between smoking and mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. While some people may use smoking as a coping mechanism for stress or emotional distress, it ultimately worsens mental health outcomes and contributes to a cycle of addiction and withdrawal.
Overall, smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable death and disease worldwide, responsible for millions of premature deaths each year. Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps individuals can take to improve their health and reduce their risk of developing smoking-related diseases.

Oshiomhole, who also served as the former President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), praised Wike for his developmental efforts and expressed gratitude to the PDP for allowing him to serve as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the APC government.
Wike, previously a staunch PDP member, supported APC’s Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election after a fallout with his party. As a reward for his support, Wike was appointed FCT Minister.
Oshiomhole compared the situation to a football club letting its “best player” join a rival team. “Thank you, PDP, for giving us Nyesom Wike to help us fix Abuja,” he said. “When you give your best player to another club, you pay a heavy price.”
The lawmaker representing Edo North also joked about the PDP’s decision, saying they didn’t ask for a transfer fee and hinted that the APC might not want to return Wike, even joking about setting up a toll gate to prevent it.
At a New Year luncheon in Port Harcourt, Oshiomhole praised Wike for his contributions to Abuja, highlighting his commitment to the rule of law and environmental regulations.

The operation was carried out in partnership with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) as part of a major counter-terrorism effort. Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Chief Military Information Officer of MNJTF, confirmed the interception on Thursday. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Mr. Murktar Alhaji Chari, admitted to transporting the materials to Damasak town in Mobbar Local Government Area for an attack targeting MNJTF troops. The seized items included four empty 12kg cylinders, one 6kg cylinder, two carburettor gas canisters, two pressure regulators, and a hose. Intelligence suggests the materials were intended for terrorists planning a retaliatory strike after recent losses, including the death of several militants and the capture of significant weapons. The suspect is currently in custody and cooperating with ongoing investigations. MNJTF Force Commander, Major General Ibrahim Ali, praised the troops and CJTF for their swift action and professionalism, reaffirming MNJTF’s commitment to combating terrorism and securing the region. According to reports, the ruling party’s candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat to former President Mahama after the December 7 election.
