The incident, occurring on December 31, 2022, marks a significant downfall for the 40-year-old football icon, celebrated as one of the sport’s most decorated players.

Despite vehemently denying the accusations of assault and seeking acquittal, the court’s decision was based on compelling evidence, including testimony beyond the victim’s account, confirming non-consensual sexual contact.

The court unequivocally established that the encounter lacked the victim’s consent, discrediting Alves’s defense that the woman could have left the nightclub’s VIP section toilet “if she wanted to.”

Throughout the trial, Alves’s narrative underwent significant fluctuations. Initially denying any interaction with the accuser, he later acknowledged meeting her in the restroom but claimed nothing untoward happened. However, his assertion of consensual interaction was contradicted by the court’s findings.

In addition to the prison sentence, Alves has been ordered to compensate the victim with €150,000 (£128,500), acknowledging her trauma and suffering.

Since January 2023, Alves has been in pre-trial detention, with the inconsistencies in his testimony becoming focal points during the trial. Despite his assertions, the evidence led to his conviction, underscoring the gravity with which the judicial system addresses such allegations.

While an appeal is permitted, the verdict sends a strong message about accountability for assault allegations, emphasizing the importance of justice for victims.
