Dr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, the coordinator of ASUU’s Kano Zone, expressed deep concern over the prevailing hunger and starvation among the Nigerian populace, warning that the country is gradually sliding into chaos and uncertainty.

He pointed out that the government’s adoption of neo-liberal policies from international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank could exacerbate the situation, pushing the nation further towards anarchy.

During the press conference, Dr. Muhammad emphasized that ASUU would collaborate with civil society organizations and NGOs to compel the government to abandon these detrimental policies.

He stressed the importance of using legal means to challenge the implementation of anti-people policies that could plunge the country into turmoil.

Furthermore, ASUU reiterated its call for the faithful implementation of agreements signed with the union, particularly regarding the renegotiation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2009 agreement.

The union highlighted the erosion of salaries due to the drastic increase in the exchange rate, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention to address the financial plight of university staff.

In addition to salary concerns, ASUU demanded the immediate payment of withheld salaries and benefits to its members, citing months of arrears.

The union also called on the Kaduna State Government to release the withheld salaries of staff at Kaduna State University without delay.

Moreover, ASUU urged the government to review the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) Act to curb the proliferation of universities in the country amid inadequate funding provisions.

While Dr. Tahir, a fresh graduate from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, was killed by the abductors, Dr. Babatunde, a housemanship staff at Edo University Teaching Hospital, Auchi, was released on January 15 after a ₦50 million ransom was paid.

The suspects—Saminu Kawujie, Idris Abubakar, and Sani Abubakar—were apprehended in separate operations. Items recovered from him included two knives, two mobile phones, a UBA ATM card, and ₦20,250. Identification parades confirmed him as one of the abductors.

Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar were arrested on February 8 at the Specialist Hospital, Auchi. Both were identified as part of the gang, with Idris specifically linked to receiving the ransom for Dr. Babatunde’s release.

ASP Eno Ikoedem, the police spokesperson, said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the entire criminal network responsible for the Auchi kidnappings.
