The prices of essential food items in major grain markets across Kano, Taraba, Kwara, and Niger states have begun to witness a decline, attributed to various factors including increased surveillance around borders, clampdown on hoarding, and the cessation of inter-state movement with food items……..CONTINUE READING
In Kano state, grain markets such as Doguwa, Tudun Wada, and Bunkure have experienced a drop in prices, with maize, soya beans, beans, and rice showing noticeable reductions. The sealing of warehouses accused of hoarding grains by the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission has been cited as a significant factor contributing to this price decrease.
Similarly, in Taraba State, markets such as Mutum Biyu, Garba-Chede, Maihula, and Iware have seen a decline in the prices of maize, millet, sorghum, white beans, soybeans, and dried cassava. Absence of middlemen who previously made bulk purchases has been identified as a contributing factor to the reduction in prices.
In Kwara State, maize prices have significantly dropped at markets like Ajase, with other grains showing gradual decreases as well. Farmers and traders attribute this decline to the anticipation of government policies that may further reduce grain prices after the release from the grain reserve.
In Niger State, particularly in Bida, the prices of maize and guinea corn have also seen a decline, attributed to the government’s decision to ban bulk buying of grains from markets. However, prices of fertilizers have witnessed a sharp increase ahead of the upcoming rainy season farming, posing challenges to farmers.
Overall, the decrease in food prices in these states is a welcome development for consumers and farmers alike, offering relief amidst economic uncertainties.
