Scheduled for rollout on Monday, February 26, 2024, the program marks a significant milestone in the quest to support educational aspirations among Nigerian citizens.
Under the stewardship of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Yemi Cardoso, the 11-member Special Committee, comprising representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies as mandated by the Students Loans Act, convened to deliberate on the impending launch.
The committee’s acting secretary, Akintunde Sawyerr, facilitated the proceedings, ensuring smooth coordination among members.
During the session, Governor Cardoso emphasized the importance of leveraging the diverse expertise within the committee to ensure the success of the program. He reiterated that the initiative stands as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, dedicated to uplifting underprivileged Nigerians through educational empowerment.
Committee members were urged to intensify engagements with stakeholders to facilitate a seamless launch of the scheme, underscoring its significance in advancing accessibility to higher education for all Nigerians.
Established following the enactment of the Access to Higher Education Act 2023 (Students Loan Act) by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023, NELFUND aims to provide financial support to disadvantaged or low-income Nigerians pursuing higher education, covering tuition fees and related expenses.
President Tinubu has further advocated for the expansion of the program to encompass vocational training, reflecting the administration’s commitment to broadening educational opportunities across Nigeria.
