State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya personally visited the burnt store following the incident. Speaking to journalists after assessing the damage, Governor Yahaya expressed deep regret over the unfortunate event. He assured that measures were underway to investigate the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Among the items destroyed were maternal and child care equipment, as well as two million doses of poliovirus vaccines, which are crucial and scarce resources serving not only Gombe but the entire North-East region. Governor Yahaya emphasized the urgent need for intervention from stakeholders, especially donor and development partners like UNICEF and WHO, given the pressing health challenges facing the region, including meningitis and cholera outbreaks.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, highlighted the extensive range of commodities lost in the fire, including vaccines, motorcycles, maternal and child health equipment provided by Rotary International, and equipment from the Primary Health Care Development Agency. Dr. Dahiru estimated the cost of the destroyed supplies to be approximately N5 billion, considering the current exchange rate and the high cost of items like polio vaccines.
Governor Yahaya instructed the Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport to take immediate measures to prevent future occurrences. Additionally, a committee has been set up to conduct a detailed inventory of the losses, while the fire service department has been tasked with determining the cause of the fire and proposing preventive measures.
