ASUU Expresses Discontent Over Partial Payment Of Withheld Salaries....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s decision to release only two months’ worth of salaries out of the seven and a half months withheld…….CONTINUE READINHG
It’s worth recalling that President Bola Tinubu had approved the release of four out of the eight-month withheld salaries in October 2023.
These salaries had been withheld during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who invoked a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy against ASUU due to their eight-month strike in 2022.
However, recent reports indicate that some union members have begun receiving truncated payments covering only two months out of the seven and a half months owed.
During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, ASUU Abuja Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Salahu Mohammed Lawal, expressed disappointment with the partial payment, stating that it falls short of the union’s expectations and further undermines members’ morale and trust in government commitments.
Lawal emphasized the need for prompt action from all parties involved to address the issue of withheld salaries, urging the government to fulfill its obligations by concluding, signing, and promptly implementing the Prof. Nimi Briggs Committee’s Renegotiated Agreement, as well as settling all outstanding promotion arrears and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
He also highlighted the government’s track record of unfulfilled promises, citing instances of unpaid allowances and arrears across various campuses. Lawal called for immediate action to settle these outstanding payments and criticized the proliferation of universities by federal and state governments without adequate funding, which he argued undermines the integrity of the university system.
