News reports that Ibrahim made this known on Monday after presenting his Letter of Credence to António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

According to the envoy, the President understands that many of Nigeria’s security challenges are linked to unresolved issues, including religious tensions and other enduring conflicts, and is committed to resolving them as a pathway to lasting peace.

He emphasised that addressing such grievances is essential to strengthening safety and stability across the country.

Ibrahim also noted that Nigeria plans to deepen international cooperation in tackling security threats, both within its borders and across the West African region.

He explained that the Tinubu administration believes active engagement at the United Nations would provide critical support in confronting security concerns at both domestic and global levels, particularly challenges emerging from the Sahel region.

The ambassador described his appointment as a sign of Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic presence at the UN after more than two years without a substantive representative, expressing confidence in closer collaboration with global partners.

He further reiterated Nigeria’s long-standing call for reforms within the UN system, especially the push for stronger African representation on the Security Council, noting that securing a permanent seat for the continent would be a significant milestone.

On the economy, Ibrahim highlighted ongoing reforms by the administration, acknowledging the short-term difficulties while expressing optimism about long-term benefits.

He added that Nigeria would continue to support global efforts on tax reforms, climate action, and multilateral cooperation aimed at promoting sustainable development and global peace.

The envoy reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to playing a leading role in advancing the objectives of the United Nations, particularly across Africa, while stressing the importance of global peace for economic stability.

At the event, Guterres underscored Nigeria’s importance in strengthening multilateral cooperation, while Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed welcomed Ibrahim’s appointment, noting that Nigeria’s absence had been noticeable within the organisation.

Nigeria became a member of the United Nations on October 7, 1960, shortly after gaining independence, and has since remained actively involved in peacekeeping operations and advocacy for institutional reforms.
