Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, revealed this during an interview with Arise TV on Monday.
Onanuga stated that during the campaign for the 2023 presidential election, President Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and other candidates unanimously agreed that fuel subsidy should be discontinued.
According to Onanuga, all candidates concurred that subsidizing fuel had become detrimental to the economy and needed to be halted.
He further explained that the Muhammadu Buhari administration had initiated plans to abolish fuel subsidy by the end of June 2023.
Onanuga elaborated, “President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi were in agreement that subsidy must be phased out. President Tinubu believed that delaying the removal of subsidy was unnecessary, which prompted the decision to eliminate it.”
Moreover, Onanuga praised President Tinubu for his decisive action in removing fuel subsidy, asserting that failure to do so would have plunged the economy into chaos.
The presidential aide also noted that the federal government has been actively seeking solutions to alleviate the burden on Nigerian citizens
