According to reports, Akinribido, who previously held the position of deputy-minority leader in the 9th House of Assembly, made his defection to the APC known on Monday.

In his declaration, the former legislator expressed his satisfaction with joining the ruling party and pledged to contribute effectively to its organizational structure, leadership, stakeholders, and membership.

Akinribido stated, “My decision to align with the APC stems from my firm belief that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa possesses the requisite capacity and political acumen to lead the state effectively and improve the welfare of its citizens.”

Reacting to Akinribido’s defection, the Chairman of the APC in Ondo State, Ade Adetimehin, expressed pleasure at the development, highlighting the intellectual prowess and capabilities of the former lawmaker as valuable assets to the party.

Adetimehin also hinted at the likelihood of more PDP stalwarts joining the APC soon, underscoring the party’s openness to embracing new members into its fold.

He remarked, “Akinribido’s decision to join us is indeed a significant milestone. His wealth of knowledge and capacity will be invaluable to the APC. We extend a warm welcome to him.

“As he has made this move, I can confidently inform you that several other prominent figures within the PDP have indicated their interest in joining the APC. In due time, their identities will become public.

“We have a wide embrace to accommodate all committed party members.”

Background of the Dispute

  • The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1215/2026, challenged the primary election that resulted in Atiku Abubakar becoming the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

  • Amaechi had previously requested the court to set aside the ADC presidential primary held on May 25, 2026, claiming that he was the rightful winner.

  • Furthermore, he had sought orders to restrain Abubakar from presenting himself as the ADC presidential candidate and to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing him as such.

  • The suit also demanded that the party be mandated to conduct a fresh primary election within 14 days, in accordance with the Electoral Act, the ADC constitution, and party guidelines.
