In a resolute statement underscoring the deepening divide between certain Sahel nations and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of Niger Republic’s military junta, has made it clear that Niger, along with Burkina Faso and Mali, stands firm in its decision to exit the regional bloc……..CONTINUE READING

During an interview with RTN news channel in Niamey on Monday, General Tchiani reiterated this stance, emphasizing the unwavering determination of the three countries in their opposition to ECOWAS.

This declaration follows the announcement by the military administrations of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger on January 28 of their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS, characterizing it as a “sovereign decision” made to depart from the bloc “without delay.”

The departure of these nations from ECOWAS represents a significant fracture within the region, challenging the unity and cohesion that the bloc has sought to uphold among its member states.

The leaders of the three Sahel countries have raised doubts about the effectiveness and advantages of their ECOWAS membership, hinting at a potential reshuffling of alliances and collaborations within the West African region.

General Tchiani expressed, “Merely being members of the bloc resulted in the disruption of food and medicine supplies. Power was also cut off, and our funds were frozen. Therefore, after consulting with our Sahel allies, we decided to withdraw from the bloc to enhance the lives of our citizens. We have exited the bloc, which is accountable to foreign nations, and we have no intention of rejoining.”

Regarding the repercussions of their withdrawal on security, trade, and socio-economic activities, he remarked, “The world is now a global village, and does ECOWAS encompass the entire world? God provides for all His creations. We will not release Bazoum. Releasing Bazoum would be akin to inflicting harm upon ourselves, which would be detrimental to the people of Niger.”
