ASUU Unveils How FG Disburses Lecturers’ Pay, Mulls Over Potential Strike....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced its dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s continued use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to distribute salaries to lecturers, despite prior assurances to exempt higher education institutions from the platform…….CONTINUE READING
In a recent interview with Punch, ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, reiterated this concern, highlighting that salaries for February were still being processed through IPPIS, contrary to the government’s announcement in December 2023.
Initially introduced in 2006 to streamline payroll management for government entities, IPPIS was slated to exclude universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. However, ASUU strongly opposed this inclusion, citing numerous discrepancies and irregularities associated with IPPIS, which led to prolonged strikes in 2020 and 2021.
Adding to ASUU’s grievances, Prof. Osodeke expressed disappointment that none of the union’s demands had been met, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, payment of Earned Academic Allowance, and the implementation of a 35 percent salary adjustment for tertiary institution workers, retroactive to January 2023. Moreover, the government’s pledge to settle four months’ worth of withheld salaries from the 2022 national strike remains unfulfilled.
When questioned about the possibility of ASUU initiating another strike to push for their demands, Osodeke stated, “Our members will decide. This is why we have resorted to strikes, even for salary reviews, yet, no action has been taken. Our February salaries were paid via IPPIS, indicating no progress or implementation. The government must fulfill its obligations and honor all agreements made with us.”
Osodeke further hinted that ASUU would soon communicate its stance through a press release.
