Business activities came to a standstill as schools, shops, and other establishments shuttered their doors. Movement in and out of Asaba, including tricycle and motorcycle services, was curtailed.
As early as 5 am, popular markets like Ogbogonogo and Oko were deserted, prepping for the solemn declaration of the demise of the 13th Asagba of Asaba.
In a solemn procession led by the Odogwu of Asaba, Chief Nwanze Odua, clad in red attire, a march circled the palace in mourning.
At approximately 5 pm, the announcement was made by the Onihe of Asaba, Obi Ubaka Attor, declaring, “Iroko has fallen, the Asagba of Asaba has gone.”
Reading from an official statement, Palace Secretary Chief Patrick Ndili conveyed, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing into eternal glory of our highly revered royal father, Asagba, Prof. Chike Edozien, the 13th Asagba of Asaba, who ascended the throne on July 1, 1991.”
Aged 100, the revered monarch’s burial arrangements will be disclosed by the family and Asaba kingdom in due course.
The announcement was followed by the firing of 21 cannons, symbolizing respect and honor for the departed ruler.
Attor also proclaimed the appointment of Asagba’s first son, Mr. Joseph Edozien, as regent.
While the news of the monarch’s demise had circulated last week through palace channels, official confirmation was withheld until after a customary seven-day period of mourning.
