In a recent development at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja, the hearing for Olu Agunloye’s preliminary objection regarding the alleged $6 billion Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station fraud was postponed on Monday………CONTINUE READING
Presided over by Judge Jude Onwuegbuzie, the court ruled that the application was not yet ready for hearing, rescheduling the matter for February 26, 2024.
Agunloye, represented by his legal counsel Adeola Adedipe, had filed a preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute him in connection with the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station project.
In his objection, Agunloye argued that the EFCC lacked the necessary investigative and prosecutorial powers as outlined in relevant sections of the EFCC Act, questioning the legal basis for the commission’s actions against him.
The charges against Agunloye relate to alleged misconduct as a public officer, including awarding contracts without proper budgetary provision, approval, and cash backing, as well as disobeying presidential directives and forging documents.
The case has attracted considerable attention due to the scale of the alleged fraud surrounding the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station project, a critical initiative aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s power generation capacity.
Agunloye was arraigned on seven charges in January 2024, including fraudulent contract awards and official corruption, to which he pleaded not guilty.
