The inferno engulfed the makeshift dwellings situated near Star Road, adjacent to Horizon Heights, Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki Lagos.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the occurrence in a statement issued on Monday.
Adeseye disclosed that the fire ravaged residential makeshift structures, spanning approximately an acre of land.
Efforts by firefighters, employing defensive firefighting strategies, successfully thwarted its progression to upscale properties.
“Notably, the fire posed a significant challenge due to the presence of 65 camp gas canisters, heightening the risk of explosions. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported,” she stated.
Preliminary investigations into the fire’s cause revealed its origin within one of the rooms within the shanties behind an estate before spreading to adjacent structures. Swift and coordinated responses from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, estate fire department, and the Nigerian Police Force averted any loss of life or injuries.
