Wigwe, accompanied by his wife and son, was among the passengers aboard the ill-fated helicopter that crashed near the Nevada border in California, United States, on Friday.

In addition to Wigwe, the chopper also carried Abimbola Ogunbajo, the former chairman of Nigeria Exchange Group, and two others.

Preliminary reports from United States Authorities indicate that adverse weather conditions, including rain and wintry weather, may have contributed to the crash.

Shortly after the official confirmation of Wigwe’s passing, Otedola took to X on Sunday to express his sorrow, describing the loss as that of “a banking genius.” He reflected on the fond memories shared with Wigwe over the years and emphasized the lasting impact of his legacy.

“Exactly two weeks ago, Herbie and his wife graciously hosted myself and Aliko to dinner at their newly constructed home in Lagos. I will forever cherish the moments spent with him,” Otedola lamented.

He concluded his message with heartfelt condolences to Wigwe’s children – Tochi, Hannah, and David – praying for God’s solace during this tragic period.
