The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal proceedings against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas…….CONTINUE READING
This action comes in response to the failure of Akpabio and Abbas to provide clarity and transparency regarding the N344.85 billion National Assembly budget, particularly concerning budget items like the N6 billion allocated for two car parks.
SERAP has filed a lawsuit against Akpabio and Abbas on behalf of themselves and all members of the National Assembly.
In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/178/2024, submitted last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, SERAP seeks a mandamus order compelling Akpabio and Abbas to disclose, clarify, and explain the details of the N344.85 billion National Assembly budget as outlined in the Appropriation Act of 2024.
Additionally, SERAP seeks clarification on the N8.5 billion designated for ‘National Assembly liabilities’ in the 2024 Appropriation Act, demanding an explanation for these liabilities and how they were incurred.
Furthermore, SERAP is requesting details on the proposed expenditures of N3 billion each for the ‘Senate Car Park’ and the ‘House of Representatives Car Park’ in the 2024 Appropriation Act.
The organization argues that the lack of transparency surrounding the spending of public funds by the National Assembly raises concerns and undermines public trust.
SERAP asserts that Nigerians have a right to know how their tax money is being utilized by lawmakers and to scrutinize the rationale behind budget allocations.
In its lawsuit, SERAP emphasizes the importance of transparency in government spending, stating that it serves as a vital check on the activities of lawmakers and helps prevent abuses of public trust.
The organization points out that public access to budget details allows citizens to hold lawmakers accountable for their actions and promotes effective democratic governance.
The lawsuit, represented by SERAP’s lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Andrew Nwankwo, underscores the constitutional and international rights of citizens to access information about the activities and spending of their lawmakers.
No date has been scheduled for the hearing of the suit at this time.
