Peter Oloya’s journey from a child soldier in Uganda to a celebrated sculptor is as remarkable as it is inspiring. Growing up amidst the turmoil of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency, Oloya found solace and inspiration in the simple act of crafting pottery with his grandmother. His artistic talents, nurtured by his grandmother’s teachings, took root early on. Despite societal norms that viewed pottery-making as a feminine pursuit, Oloya pursued his passion relentlessly, drawing inspiration from his surroundings and experiences. Even during the darkest moments of his abduction by the LRA, Oloya found solace in sculpting with clay, a therapeutic outlet that helped him cope with unimaginable horrors.
Following his escape from captivity, Oloya’s commitment to art only deepened. He worked tirelessly to hone his skills, eventually graduating from the Makerere School of Fine Art. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, including financial hardship and societal stigma, Oloya remained steadfast in his pursuit of artistic expression.
Today, Oloya’s work transcends traditional boundaries, blending elements of sculpture, painting, and mixed media to convey powerful messages about culture, identity, and the environment. His art serves as a potent reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of creativity.
In his latest exhibition at London’s Pangolin Gallery, Oloya explores themes of beauty, modernity, and environmental degradation through a series of striking sculptures and installations. From bronze pieces depicting cracked earth to bark cloth dresses adorned with old mobile phone keyboards, his work challenges viewers to confront pressing issues facing our planet.
Through his art, Oloya hopes to spark meaningful conversations and inspire positive change. His journey from child soldier to celebrated artist is a testament to the indomitable power of the human spirit and the transformative potential of art.
