Cardiologists are advising individuals with pre-existing heart conditions and those deeply connected to football to either refrain from intense involvement or regulate their excitement during the game and take necessary breaks.
This caution follows the sudden deaths of four Nigerians after watching the Nigeria-South Africa semi-final match last Wednesday.
Experts suggest that such individuals may experience heightened emotions that could trigger cardiac events such as heart attacks or strokes.
They explain that those predisposed to such conditions may face elevated risks when subjected to sudden emotional surges, possibly leading to fatal outcomes.
In an interview with Sunday Vanguard, Prof Augustine Odili, President of the Nigerian Cardiac Society (NCS), pointed out the possibility of these deaths being caused by acute triggers of myocardial infarction, commonly known as heart attacks, due to heightened emotions.
Odili emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding each death, including the timing and events during the match. He stressed the need for caution, particularly for individuals with strong emotional ties to such events, advising them to avoid intense football watching to mitigate potential health risks.
