Amid escalating tension, members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives are gearing up to challenge the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria regarding recent guidelines concerning certificate verification processes……….CONTINUE READING
Nurses and midwives nationwide have expressed frustration over the deactivation of the NMCN verification portal since December 2023. They believe the council intentionally disabled the portal to hinder their pursuit of career opportunities abroad.
Speculations suggest that this move might be part of the Federal Government’s efforts to discourage health workers from seeking better prospects overseas.
On February 7, 2024, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) issued a memorandum outlining revised guidelines for requesting certificate verification for nurses and midwives. According to the new guidelines, eligible applicants must have a minimum of two years of post-qualification experience from the date of issuance of the permanent practicing license.
The memorandum was circulated to various stakeholders, including state ministries of Health, university teaching hospitals, specialist and federal medical centres, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) headquarters, universities offering nursing programs, colleges of nursing sciences, schools of nursing and midwifery, all post-basic nursing programs, and all nursing and midwifery councils’ zonal offices.
As the principal regulatory body under the Federal Government, the NMCN ensures the provision of safe and effective nursing and midwifery care through quality education and practices. It regulates standards of education and practice in Nigeria, adapting them to meet evolving health needs.
In 2023, the NANNM reported that over 75,000 nurses and midwives had left the country in pursuit of better opportunities within a five-year period. The association raised concerns about increased insecurity, including rising incidents of kidnappings and violence against its members in the workplace.
Michael Nnachi, the President of the association, highlighted the adverse effects of the ongoing brain drain on the healthcare sector. He emphasized that the migration of nurses has exacerbated the existing shortage of healthcare workers, placing significant strains on the healthcare delivery system and limiting access to care for many individuals.
Nnachi stressed that the current situation was overburdening nurses who are already inadequately compensated and facing economic challenges amidst rising inflation and stagnant salaries.
