Major General Ahmed Sabo (retd), the captain of the Calabar Golf Club, highlighted the government’s disinterest as a significant factor contributing to the absence of major international tournaments in Cross River State.
During a visit to Governor Bassey Otu’s office, Sabo emphasized the potential of golf as a premier tourist attraction through the hosting of prestigious tournaments.
“We urge the state government to recognize golf’s capacity to draw distinguished individuals to the state and enhance tourism,” Sabo stated.
The club reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Otu-led administration’s efforts to improve the state.
As a gesture of goodwill, they presented the governor with golfing equipment as their patron.
In response, Governor Bassey Otu expressed his administration’s dedication to revitalizing golf as a prestigious sport capable of attracting both national and international attention and investment.
“I am pleased with the historical significance of golf starting in Calabar, Nigeria. However, many opportunities have slipped away from us. Our current endeavor is to not only reclaim but also position ourselves back on the map,” Otu remarked.
He assured the golf club of his administration’s assistance in maintaining their golf course.
