The decision of numerous women in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, to embark on a protest last Tuesday undoubtedly signified a serious concern. Likewise, any situation that impedes a couple from fulfilling significant marital duties cannot be overlooked.

The women, predominantly married, converged on the office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company near the Isaac Adaka Boro Park, decrying the inadequate power supply which they asserted had negatively impacted their intimate lives.

Originating from the Mile 2 and Mile 3 areas of Diobu, a densely populated region with inadequate urban planning, these irate women vented their frustrations over the prolonged blackout.

Marching with determination, they brandished placards, blocking the entrance of the Port Harcourt Disco and lamenting that their husbands had little time for them at night due to the intense heat resulting from the power outage.

Their placards bore poignant messages, including “We lack intimacy with our husbands,” “Our husbands no longer embrace us at night,” “No power, no payment,” “The heat is unbearable,” and “PHED, assist us in sleeping well with our husbands.”

Expressing her grievances, a protester named Chinasa described the situation as exhausting.

“I reside on Dim Street. This issue has become exhausting for me. I am a married woman with two children and I desire to complete my family, but there’s no opportunity. Whenever I attempt to be intimate with my husband, he complains about the intense heat,” she lamented.

Chinasa emphasized the importance of intimacy in her marriage and urged the government and PHED to intervene, highlighting the adverse effects of the blackout on marital relations.

Another protester, Mercy, who identified herself as single, voiced her solidarity with her married neighbors, emphasizing the broader impact of the power outage on the community.

“The blackout has persisted for over two weeks, despite our regular bill payments. My neighbors, who are married women, have been complaining that their husbands no longer touch them due to the heat. Additionally, my business is suffering because customers complain about warm drinks,” Mercy explained.

Meanwhile, a landlord in the Mile Three area, Nelson Ogbuji, questioned the rationale behind the Disco’s failure to provide power despite prompt bill payments.

“We consistently pay our bills but receive no electricity. The sudden interruption of power for weeks leaves us in darkness, making it challenging to fulfill marital obligations. My wife finds the heat unbearable, hindering our intimacy,” Ogbuji lamented.

Addressing the protests, Livingstone Koko, a public relations officer with the Disco, attributed the power situation to constraints within the value chain, expressing empathy with the protesters’ plight.

Concurrently, in Niger State, a separate protest unfolded, triggered by escalating food prices and economic hardships faced by residents.

Unlike the Rivers protest, the one in Niger State commenced as a simple lamentation by a market woman, Aisha Jibrin, who expressed frustration over her inability to provide for her family due to soaring prices.

However, what began as a casual conversation quickly escalated into a mass protest as Jibrin and others mobilized women and youths to voice their grievances.

Gathering at the Bida-Minna Road, the protesters decried the unrelenting rise in the cost of living, demanding government intervention to alleviate their plight.

The protest caught the attention of Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who appealed for patience while assuring the residents of ongoing efforts to address their concerns.

However, tensions escalated as the police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces.

Despite the arrests made by security agencies, many residents expressed solidarity with the protesters, urging the government to take decisive action to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.

In response to mounting pressure, the Federal Government ordered the release of over 102,000 metric tons of various grains to mitigate the food crisis.

While the protests in both states reflected distinct grievances, they underscored the profound impact of socio-economic challenges on communities across Nigeria. As citizens continue to demand accountability and solutions from the government, the need for swift and effective action remains paramount.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
