These initiatives aim to eliminate all potholes on Nigeria’s federal and state highways and to re-establish links with isolated communities affected by the deteriorating condition of the roads.

According to FERMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Emeka Agbasi, the campaigns will soon eradicate the menace of bad roads across Nigeria.

He stated, “In line with our ‘Operation Connect to Your Destination,’ flagged off in December, we are here today to assess the progress in Akwa Ibom State. We started in Port Harcourt, touched Bayelsa, and now we are here in Akwa Ibom along the Ete-Abak road. Our aim is to provide safe and motorable roads for commuters.”

FERMA’s Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer, Engr. Festus Okafor, highlighted the impact of the agency’s intervention on the Ete-Abak road, emphasizing that prior to the rehabilitation, the road’s condition halted economic activities in the area.

He stated, “This section of the Ete-Abak road was so bad that commercial activities came to a standstill. With FERMA’s intervention, we have connected Ikot Abasi to Uyo, the state capital, by constructing a double box culvert. We have also addressed drainage issues and patched critical sections of the road.”

Speaking further, Director of the Mechanical Department at FERMA Headquarters, Engr. Ilegbusi Moses Adebayo, emphasized the importance of eliminating potholes to enhance security on the roads.

He said, “By fixing potholes, we reduce the risk of highway kidnapping and banditry. FERMA is committed to achieving zero tolerance to potholes on our roads through direct labor. We assure the government of our continued performance with adequate support.”

Despite challenges such as funding constraints, FERMA remains dedicated to its mission of maintaining Nigeria’s roads and ensuring safe and efficient transportation for all citizens.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
