Abumisi conveyed this distressing information during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, expressing deep concern over the prevailing economic challenges faced by many union members.

He lamented the apparent disregard for the welfare of retirees by the government, particularly citing the alarming situation in Enugu, where pensioners are receiving as little as N450 monthly.

Highlighting the widespread issue, Abumisi pointed out that such low pension payments are particularly prevalent in the Southeastern states, indicating a lack of pension harmonization across the country, which the union has persistently advocated for.

Furthermore, he underscored that the failure of several state governments to implement the reviewed minimum wage, both in 2010 and 2019, has exacerbated the situation, as pension increases corresponding to these wage reviews have not been realized in affected states.

In 2023, the Federal Government expressed its commitment to addressing the pension issue by indicating its interest in raising retirees’ pensions, as outlined in the pension harmonization report submitted to the Federal Government by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission.

The NSIWC assured the executive committee of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (All Sectoral Units/Parastatals) Nationwide of its active pursuit of the recommendations outlined in the report to address the plight of retirees.

State APC spokesperson, Olawale Sadare, dismissed the governor’s claim that he is limited in addressing insecurity because security structures are under federal control.
