The highly anticipated match, eagerly awaited by fans of both nations, took a solemn turn as reports emerged of fatal incidents occurring during the game.
According to accounts, the fatalities occurred during critical junctures of the match. One tragedy struck when South Africa was awarded a penalty kick against Nigeria towards the end of the game, while another incident unfolded during the penalty shoot-outs, resulting in the alleged loss of lives of at least four Nigerians.
The deceased individuals include Samuel, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who reportedly collapsed and passed away at a viewing center in Adamawa. Additionally, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a former member of the House of Representatives representing Ika federal constituency of Delta State, and Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the deputy bursar of Kwara State University (KWASU), also lost their lives while watching the high-stakes encounter.
Mikail Osundiji, a sales representative in Ogun State, was similarly reported to have succumbed during the tension-filled match.
Furthermore, unverified reports suggest that Anambra-born billionaire Chief Osondu Nwoye, residing in Ivory Coast, allegedly passed away while watching Wednesday’s AFCON semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa.
