Reports from the BBC and local media outlets indicate that Nairobi Police have verified the escape of the 41-year-old suspect from their custody. Kangethe reportedly absconded from the police station and boarded a vehicle.

The Kenya Times disclosed that Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei confirmed the incident and assured ongoing investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s escape, especially considering his status as a US government fugitive.

Bungei further confirmed the apprehension of four police officers and a lawyer in connection with the incident.

Kangethe had been detained pending the execution of an extradition request from US authorities.

According to The Kenya Times, an individual claiming to be Kangethe’s legal representative visited the Muthaiga Police Station and requested access to the suspect. However, on February 7th, Kangethe vanished, triggering an immediate probe.

According to BBC reports, Kangethe stands accused of murdering his girlfriend in October 2022, leaving her body in a vehicle at Boston Logan International Airport, before fleeing to Kenya, his country of origin.

US media reports suggest that Margaret Mbitu, Kangethe’s girlfriend, had intended to end their relationship before her tragic demise. Mbitu, a nurse from Kenya, was last seen leaving her workplace on October 30, 2022, before being reported missing. Her body was discovered two days later.

Authorities speculate that Kangethe departed the US in the interim between Mbitu’s disappearance and the discovery of her remains. Security footage at the airport implicated Kangethe in the crime.

Kangethe was apprehended in Nairobi’s Parklands area in November following a manhunt. On February 1st, the Kenya Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions acknowledged receipt of an extradition request from the US, charging Kangethe with first-degree murder in Massachusetts. Subsequently, a Nairobi court granted a 30-day custody order to facilitate extradition proceedings.

Strategic Partnership Details

  • Formal Agreement: The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the NDLEA headquarters.

  • Operational Integration: The partnership includes provisions for intelligence sharing, coordinated joint operations, officer capacity building, and the exchange of technical resources.

  • Joint Working Committee: A committee will be established to ensure the agreement translates into tangible operational results.

Rationale for Collaboration

  • Shared Criminal Networks: NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), noted that criminal syndicates often engage in both narcotics trafficking and the piracy of creative works, using proceeds from one illicit activity to finance the other.

  • Economic and Social Impact: NCC Director-General, Dr. John Asein, emphasized that organized piracy is a major criminal enterprise that undermines Nigeria’s creative economy, destroys jobs, and weakens national security.

  • Intersecting Supply Chains: Both agencies identified that the same clandestine networks, transportation routes, and financial channels used for drug trafficking are frequently utilized to distribute pirated goods and launder criminal proceeds.

  • Inter-Agency Synergy: The leadership of both organizations highlighted the importance of moving away from isolated operations toward a collaborative model that leverages the specific expertise and intelligence capabilities of each agency.

The initiative aims to more effectively disrupt illegal supply chains, dismantle criminal structures, and protect both the creative sector and the general public from the influence of organized crime.
