Peterside Warns Of Potential Attacks On Nigerians: Xenophobia, Not Just Football....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Idah Peterside, former Nigerian goalkeeper, has asserted that South Africans may target Nigerians regardless of the outcome of the Super Eagles versus Bafana Bafana match at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast…..CONTINUE READING
Peterside made these remarks in response to the recent advisory issued by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria for Nigerian residents in South Africa.
The advisory, released on Monday, referenced “potentially inflammatory” online statements by some South Africans against Nigerians living in the country, particularly in light of the AFCON semi-final.
In its warning, the High Commission, situated in Pretoria, South Africa, urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and conduct themselves appropriately before, during, and after the match.
Discussing the situation on Channels Television ahead of Wednesday’s AFCON semi-final clash between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana, Peterside stressed that there exists a deep-rooted rivalry between the two nations, extending beyond football and into political realms.
He emphasized that this rivalry is fueled by a quest for supremacy and is not confined to football alone.
Peterside stated, “The circular was forwarded to me. This isn’t the first time we’ve faced harassment. There’s an underlying rivalry between these countries. It’s not solely about football; it’s political. On a lighter note, their women show more favor towards us than their men do, but this rivalry extends beyond football. It’s occurred on numerous occasions, and we cannot overlook it.”
He added, “Whether we win or they win, there may be attacks against us. It transcends football; it’s xenophobia.”
