The deadly ambush took place on Tuesday afternoon, February 6, 2024, according to reports.
Earlier on February 1, 2024, the same armed group had launched an attack on the community, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and significant property damage, including the destruction of eight houses, six vehicles, and seven motorcycles.
The soldiers and vigilantes were on a peacekeeping mission to restore calm to the troubled area when they were ambushed and killed by the assailants.
Abdullahi Aliyu Tashas, the chairman of Toto local government area, confirmed the attack and casualty count to reporters on Wednesday. He stated that the soldiers had been deployed to maintain peace in response to previous attacks by the militia group.
Tashas alleged that the same Bassa militia that had attacked four communities in Katakpa village were responsible for the ambush on the soldiers.
He reported that the bodies of the deceased soldiers had been recovered and handed over to military representatives who visited the area following the attack.
The incident occurred just a week after armed assailants killed three individuals and caused extensive property damage in another attack on the community.
Additionally, about three weeks prior to the recent attack, the suspected militia group had targeted the neighboring Okudud community, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and numerous injuries, along with extensive property destruction.
