Calls For Decentralization: Olawepo-Hashim Advocates For State And Local Government Policing

He made these remarks in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, in response to the recent abduction and murder of Oba Olusegun Aremu, a retired Army General, in Olu Koro, Ekiti Local Government Area of the State.
Prior to the Olu Koro incident, gunmen had also killed two Ekiti monarchs – the Onimojo of Imojo, Oba Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin.
Additionally, in the same region, assailants attacked a school bus and abducted five pupils of the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, along with three teachers and the bus driver.
Olawepo-Hashim condemned these barbaric acts, emphasizing that they represent yet another tragic chapter in the ongoing spate of killings targeting community leaders and their constituents by marauding gangs of terrorists and kidnappers operating clandestinely across many states in Nigeria.
Expressing his frustration, Olawepo-Hashim questioned the delay on the part of the President and the party leadership to take decisive action. He pointed out that since many state governments and local government councils are controlled by the APC, along with the party’s dominance in the National Assembly and most State Houses of Assembly, obtaining legislative consensus to establish state policing should be achievable within a week.
The push for the establishment of state police has gained momentum due to the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, with advocates arguing that Nigeria’s vast size necessitates decentralized policing responsibilities at the state level.
Olawepo-Hashim contended that while the immediate implementation of local policing may not completely eradicate insecurity in Nigeria, it would address approximately fifty percent of the challenges currently faced.
