Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu, but it later transformed into a Buddhist shrine. Its name, which translates to “City of Temples,” reflects its significance as the center of religious and spiritual life during the Khmer Empire.

Angkor Wat’s architectural design is a masterpiece of Khmer art and engineering. Spanning over 400 acres (162 hectares), the temple complex encompasses a series of concentric galleries, towers, and courtyards, intricately adorned with bas-reliefs, carvings, and sculptures depicting Hindu and Buddhist mythological themes.

At the heart of Angkor Wat stands its central tower, towering over 200 feet (61 meters) above the surrounding landscape. This iconic structure, symbolizing Mount Meru, the cosmic center of the universe in Hindu mythology, is surrounded by four smaller towers and a series of enclosures, each representing different levels of spiritual ascent.

The intricate bas-reliefs adorning the walls of Angkor Wat tell the stories of Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, as well as scenes from Khmer history and mythology. These stunning carvings, meticulously executed by skilled artisans, offer a glimpse into the cultural and religious beliefs of the Khmer people.
