Mikel commended Nwabali for becoming the standout player of the tournament with his remarkable displays for Nigeria. The Chippa United shot-stopper has garnered immense popularity among Nigerian fans.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel highlighted the collective excellence of the entire team but particularly emphasized the crucial role of the goalkeeper. He expressed satisfaction with the resolution of the goalkeeping position, a concern he had emphasized before the tournament.

Mikel remarked, “When you look through the whole team everybody has been absolutely superb, starting from the goalkeeper which is something I talked about before the tournament. I said one position we need to make sure we sort out is the goalkeeping position and we’ve managed to do that.”

He continued, “He’s based in Africa and he’s managed to become the talk of the tournament, he’s become one of the favorites for the Nigerian fans. He’s put in very good performances.”

Highlighting Nwabali’s crucial contribution, Mikel mentioned a pivotal save before Nigeria scored against Angola, emphasizing how it could have altered the game’s dynamics if the ball had gone in.

Nwabali has maintained an impressive record in the 2023 AFCON, keeping four clean sheets and conceding only one goal. As Nigeria faces South Africa in the semi-final on Wednesday, the goalkeeper is expected to play a vital role for Jose Peseiro’s squad.
