Breaking News: 13 Arrested In Ekiti For Involvement In Monarchs’ Killing And Pupils’ Abduction

The fatal incident occurred on Monday when gunmen ambushed the Onimojo of Imojo, Oba Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin, resulting in their deaths. The Alara of Ara Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba, narrowly escaped a similar fate. The monarchs were returning from a security meeting in Kogi State when they encountered the kidnappers’ ambush on the highway between Ipao and Oke Ako in the Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
In the same region, kidnappers targeted a school bus, abducting five pupils from the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, along with three teachers and the bus driver.
The Force Public Relations Officer, in a statement, conveyed the strong condemnation of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, regarding the monarchs’ killing and the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Ekiti. Adejobi confirmed that an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) had been assigned to coordinate a comprehensive security response to address the unfortunate incidents in Ekiti and parts of Ondo. Thirteen suspects have been apprehended in connection with the incidents, and the IGP assured the public of the NPF’s commitment to justice and preventing a recurrence. Adejobi urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as efforts are made to restore peace and security in the affected areas.
The Chairman of Ekiti State Traditional Council, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro, emphasized that the traditional rulers in the state are determined to explore all possible solutions to the security crisis. While not disclosing specific tactics, he assured the public that the traditional council would address the insecurity issue swiftly, following an emergency meeting with the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and all monarchs in the state. Oba Faboro stated, “Any solution is acceptable; we will approach our problem with every possible solution.”

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
