Oil Thieves Apprehended: Akwa Ibom Marketers Applaud NSCDC’s Vigilance

The NSCDC operatives successfully detained six individuals masquerading as a Joint Security Tax Force from an agency, who were engaged in illegal activities. The operatives intercepted a significant quantity of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, totaling 45,000 litres.

The suspects were apprehended along the Calabar-Itu Highway on Monday by the Anti-Vandal squad of the NSCDC, acting on a tip-off. In response to these developments, the state chairman of the association, Sam Osung, issued a statement in Uyo on Thursday, expressing gratitude for the courage displayed by the NSCDC operatives and pledging collaboration to eradicate the issue of oil theft in the state.

Osung stated, “We commend the uncompromising disposition of the NSCDC and their gallant operations that led to the apprehension of the perpetrators. It is surprising the extent the suspected syndicate can go by way of impersonating the security Joint Taskforce just to mislead and see the successful smuggling of illegally procured petroleum products to Akwa Ibom State.”

As stakeholders in the downstream supply and distribution chain, NOGSAN, Akwa Ibom State chapter, pledged ongoing support to the NSCDC and other relevant agencies to eradicate this menace. The group emphasized the need for collective efforts to eliminate unscrupulous practices in the petroleum industry and protect the integrity of legitimate dealers.

The association called for a thorough investigation, possible prosecution, and public scrutiny of the perpetrators to ensure justice is served. Expressing confidence in the NSCDC’s capabilities, NOGSAN believes that with intentional and proficient efforts, the petroleum industry in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria can be rid of illicit activities and practices.

Prior to this incident, NOGSAN had previously commended the security agencies for their efforts in combating oil theft in the state. The association applauded the NSCDC for proactively addressing oil sector fraud, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the petroleum industry in Akwa Ibom State.
