Hailing from Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, Chukwu collaborated with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, to execute the plan, citing “economic hardship in the country” as the motive.
During the interrogation, Chukwu, who has 11 children, revealed that she decided to sell two of her sons due to financial constraints in providing for their needs.
The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, and security operatives arrested the suspects after posing as buyers when information about the transaction reached the ministry.
Chukwu admitted, “I have 11 kids, and when I could not cater to them, I decided to sell two of them.” The prices were initially set at N1 million each for the boys, but after negotiation by the commissioner posing as a buyer, they agreed on N1.8 million instead of the initial N2 million.
She further explained that her interest in this venture arose after her neighbor successfully sold one of her kids. This incident marked her first attempt at such a business. Chukwu had two children with her husband, and the remaining nine children came after her husband’s demise, making it challenging for her to provide adequate care and support.
Chukwu’s 17-year-old daughter, the eldest of the 11 children, disclosed that the plan was to use the proceeds from the sale to fund her tertiary education.
In response to the situation, Commissioner Obinabo ordered that the remaining children of the suspect be taken into the state government’s custody for proper care. She also pledged to apprehend the woman’s neighbor, who had previously sold off her own child. After the neighbor’s arrest, contact tracing would be initiated to retrieve the child.
Commissioner Obinabo emphasized the state government’s commitment to eliminating such crimes and warned that individuals engaging in such activities would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
