In April 2022, a tragic incident occurred at the Bonny-Bille-Nembe Jetty, resulting in the alleged loss of lives, including a pregnant woman, a two-month-old baby, and two others during an early morning fire.

The fire incident in April also saw over 40 boats destroyed, with reports suggesting that it was triggered by individuals attempting to load illegally refined products, commonly known as “kpofire” locally.

The recent fire, which is still ongoing, has consumed more than six market boats, trapping passengers within its flames. The Bonny-Bille-Nembe Jetty is a significant transit point for riverine residents traveling to destinations beyond Port Harcourt and the state.

A similar tragedy occurred in November 2021 when three children and two others lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a large wooden passenger boat at the same jetty.

While the cause of the latest fire is yet to be determined, eyewitnesses attribute it to the haphazard storage and transportation of illegally refined petroleum products in the area.

An eyewitness named Lartey recounted, “The fire actually started with an explosion. Some house boats carried liquid materials suspected to be refined oil when it started. The first explosion led to two other explosions in the boats. Some makeshift buildings and structures near the jetty were also affected.”

The incident caused chaos as traders and travelers scrambled to salvage their belongings. Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke billowing into the atmosphere, and hundreds of people stood at a distance helplessly watching the scene.

Workers at the jetty, along with other volunteers, engaged in self-help efforts by using a mixture of detergents and sand in water to combat the raging fire. Despite their efforts, the fire continued to burn, particularly in the part extending into the deep waters, leaving onlookers in dismay.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
