Amidst escalating anti-immigrant unrest in South Africa, the Federal Government has launched a voluntary repatriation program for Nigerians, with officials anticipating over 1,000 citizens will return home. Registration for the evacuation began Thursday, and the Nigerian High Commission is working with South African authorities to ensure citizens with immigration issues can depart without facing detention. The Federal Government is organizing the evacuation of over 1,000 Nigerians from South Africa as xenophobic tensions and attacks against foreign nationals continue to mount. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed that registration for the voluntary program is currently underway. To facilitate a smooth process, Nigeria’s High Commission is negotiating with South African officials to allow those with immigration complications to exit the country without being detained. Interestingly, former Governor Peter Obi recently highlighted a complex challenge to this rescue mission: during discussions in Abuja, he revealed that many Nigerians in South Africa have rejected the government’s assistance, choosing to stay despite the hostility because they perceive the situation back home to be even more dire.

Key Updates Included:

  • Repatriation Effort: The government is proactively facilitating the return of over 1,000 citizens.

  • Logistical Cooperation: The High Commission is working to prevent the detention of those seeking to return.

  • Public Sentiment: Peter Obi reported that many affected Nigerians are choosing to remain in South Africa despite the danger, citing concerns about conditions within Nigeria.

The rapper further lamented that despite Nigerians living together for many years, the nation remains hindered by tribal, ethnic, and religious divisions that prevent citizens from fully embracing one another. Summarizing his stance, he remarked:

  • He questioned how the city would function if every Igbo person were asked to depart.

  • He stressed that Nigeria should be more accommodating of its citizens regardless of their background.

  • He noted that it is unfortunate that the country continues to be plagued by divisions that undermine national progress.
