The unfortunate event unfolded at the Bamboo area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inward Lagos, leaving the community shaken and demanding urgent action.

The victims, including Aivoji and other party chieftains, were reportedly returning from a South-West stakeholders meeting in Ibadan when the ambush occurred. The perpetrators of the crime are said to be demanding a staggering N200 million for the release of the abducted party leaders.

Speaking about the incident, the governorship candidate of Lagos PDP in the 2023 general elections, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, provided details, revealing that the attack transpired on their way back to Lagos after the meeting. He expressed deep concern over the brazen act of violence that unfolded along a major expressway.

The PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, issued a statement urgently calling on security agencies and government authorities to intervene promptly and secure the release of Philip Aivoji and the other victims. The statement highlighted the prevalence of kidnapping in the country, expressing dismay at the government’s apparent inability to address this growing menace.

Aivoji’s abduction underscores the gravity of the situation, prompting a call for decisive actions from the government and stakeholders to eradicate this menace. The PDP emphasized that the incident was violent, and the whereabouts of Aivoji, as well as any communication from the abductors, remain unknown.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, reported that they were yet to ascertain the identity and numbers of the kidnapped victims. She disclosed that the victims, including Mr. Adeyinka Matthew, the Chief Security Officer of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade, were rushed to the hospital after sustaining bullet wounds, while one victim, Bilikisu Kazeem, succumbed to her injuries.

The authorities, including the police and army, responded promptly to the incident. However, the kidnapping underscores the need for intensified efforts to address the rising wave of insecurity, particularly along major highways, and to ensure the safety and security of citizens as they go about their daily lives.
