The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural group, has raised serious concerns over the escalating prevalence of roadblocks and extortion activities on the roads of the South-East region. Okeke-Ogene voiced his frustration, highlighting that security operatives, adorned in various uniforms, are frequently setting up roadblocks across the region, ostensibly for security purposes but, in reality, engaging in extortion of the motoring public. He cited a particular stretch from Onitsha to Ekwulobia, revealing that there were more than 10 roadblocks solely established for extorting money from motorists, with the amounts varying depending on the time of day. Furthermore, he expressed his disappointment by emphasizing that the proceeds from these illicit roadblocks could be substantial enough to fund the construction of a third Niger Bridge in the region.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo official lamented the lack of action and public discourse regarding this concerning issue. He drew parallels with the foundation of the Association of Past Presidents General of Anambra State and the Association of Anambra State Town Union, stating that such organizations emerged in response to maltreatment during military administrations, including harassment, intimidation, and extortion.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Okeke-Ogene remarked, “Today, the roadblocks have increased, even to residential areas, and nobody is talking. The level of extortions at these roadblocks is enough to build a third Niger Bridge. You can’t imagine how much they make from those roadblocks. And these are done by intimidation, not voluntary. We must continue to fight against it.”
The call to action from Ohanaeze Ndigbo underscores the urgency of addressing the widespread issue of roadblocks and extortion in the South-East, urging both the public and relevant authorities to take steps to curb these practices and ensure the safety and well-being of the region’s citizens.
