Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Bassey shared that the state command apprehended a total of 195 suspects during the period, consisting of 159 males and 36 females. Additionally, the agency seized drugs weighing 1,267.244 kilograms with an estimated value in millions of naira.

Bassey highlighted the achievements, stating, “For the year 2023 just ended, the Akwa Ibom Command recorded the following achievements: arrested 195 suspects, comprising 159 males and 36 females, recorded drug seizures totaling 1,267.244 kg, secured 68 convictions and all of them are serving jail terms in our custodial centres.”

She further emphasized the significant improvement compared to 2022 statistics, with a notable 175% increase in drug seizures—from 460.344kg in 2022 to 1,267.244kg in 2023. Bassey pointed out that the prevalence of hard drugs in Akwa Ibom State has contributed to a rise in criminal activities, including cult clashes, youth unrest, armed robberies, kidnappings, and militancy.

Bassey acknowledged the challenges faced by the NDLEA in Akwa Ibom, citing the need for operational vehicles to cover the 31 local government areas effectively.
