In a recent incident, five sisters and their father were abducted from their residence in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Mansoor Al-Kadriyar, the father, was released with the demand to raise N60 million for the release of his daughters. Tragically, one of the sisters, Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, a 400-level Biological Science student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was killed when the ransom deadline wasn’t met. The kidnappers have now increased the ransom to N100 million, threatening the remaining sisters.
The nation is grappling with a surge in killings and abductions, spreading fear from homes to farms, schools, roads, trains, and communities. Nigerians question why successive governments have failed to secure the populace despite substantial defense budgets, including non-budgeted expenditures like former President Muhammadu Buhari’s payment for Tucano jets.
Citizens express alarm at the escalating insecurity, feeling let down by a seemingly powerless government. Corruption, inadequate intelligence gathering, and ineffective surveillance are cited as contributors to the worsening security challenges. The people call for collaboration between security agencies and the public, emphasizing the urgent establishment of counter-terrorism centers nationwide.
Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in Akwa Ibom State, hints at a possible conspiracy theory behind the persistent insecurity. He urges a comprehensive analysis of the situation and emphasizes the need for intelligence to uncover the root causes, especially in the supposed safest region, the Federal Capital Territory.
Former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Idada Ikponmwen (rtd), advocates for synergy between the people and security agencies as the solution. He stresses the importance of alert citizens providing information and calls for penalties for those withholding vital information. Additionally, Ikponmwen insists that security agencies must prioritize their responsibilities and handle cases of crime with the seriousness they deserve. Many citizens express skepticism about the competence of security agencies, calling for increased confidence and funding to address the primary purpose of government – security.
