Despite the hardships, he assured the public of a promising future. Tinubu, who serves as the Visitor to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), addressed attendees at the university’s 54th convocation ceremony.
While Tinubu expressed optimism, Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province voiced concerns about the removal of the petroleum subsidy, naira scarcity, and the declining value of the national currency, leading to increased living costs and widespread dismay.
The bishops also called for enhanced security measures and opposed the endorsement of same-sex marriages.
Additionally, the Chariah Council urged the President to promptly address the economic challenges resulting from recent government decisions and emphasized the need for a robust approach to tackling insecurity.
Represented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN, Tinubu recognized the impact on citizens, particularly in the high cost of living affecting parents, guardians, students, and others. He highlighted the government’s commitment to mitigating these challenges and ensuring that no Nigerian child would be forced to drop out of school. Initiatives such as the School Feeding Programme and the Student Loan Scheme were introduced to alleviate the burden on parents, with loans becoming repayable two years after the completion of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme.
Tinubu also underscored the government’s dedication to higher education by removing higher institutions from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and actively pursuing autonomy for universities.
