Following the extra-judicial killing of Mr Daniel Chukwuemeka Ogbosain by indigenes of Okpokunou community in Burutu local government area, Delta State, the Department of State Security, DSS, Thursday, arrested some suspects and handed them over to the police command in Asaba, the state capital….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a community source, the late Ogbosain was accused of stealing on May 2, 2023, in the community, and the community chairman, Mr Tokekeme Emgbouke, ordered his beating and gave up the ghost in the process of the mob attack.

According to the source, “When he was confirmed dead, the community, led by the chairman, deposited the corpse in Bomadi General Hospital morgue. After a few days, the same community chairman ordered the removal of the corpse from the mortuary and was given a shallow burial. Thereafter, the corpse was exhumed and thrown into the river for sea creatures to feast on.

“Then, the family of the deceased sent a petition to the State Commissioner of Police, which was copied to the Inspector General of Police, IGP, in Abuja, signed by the Ogbosain family lawyer on behalf of the Ogbosain family and family leaders of the Obotebe community, all in Burutu local government area, to arrest and prosecute the culprits behind the dastardly act for justice to prevail.

“The police in Okpokunou community earlier attempted to make an arrest, but the suspects overpowered them, humiliated them, and assaulted the DPO by disarming the police, forcing all the policemen to sit on the floor of the community hall with a warning to refrain from the matter or risk being killed.

“Again, the Okpokunou Police Division earlier this month sought assistance from the Joint Task Force, JTF, Bomadi Division, located some few kilometres away from Okpokunou, who swung into action and arrested the community chairman, Mr. Tokekeme Emgbouke, who was trying to flee the community. He has been handed over to the police since his arrest.

“After the arrest of the community chairman, some of his family members attacked family members of the deceased by assaulting them, resulting in the destruction of their houses and other property worth over N200 million over the arrest of their brother.

“Since the culprits had overpowered the police division in the area, family members of the deceased again made a move and contacted men of the DSS, who aided the police in arresting some of the suspects today and who have been transferred to Asaba, the state capital.”

The investigation details reveal conflicting accounts of the tragic event:

  • The Mother’s Account: Agnes claims she took Nancy to the pastor solely for counseling and prayer. She stated that after Nancy confessed to the theft, she left the pastor’s house to verify the location of the missing money, only to encounter the pastor rushing her daughter to the hospital upon her return. She firmly denies requesting that the pastor kill or physically harm the teenager.

  • The Pastor’s Account: Pastor Samson, 45, alleges that the mother specifically requested that he discipline the girl for her repeated theft and habit of sleeping away from home. He admitted to using a horsewhip on the minor, claiming he stopped after 13 to 15 strokes when she became noticeably weak. He insisted he had no intention of killing the girl, whom he described as being like a daughter to him.

The Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, has confirmed both arrests and stated that an investigation is currently underway. Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua has reaffirmed the command’s dedication to maintaining public safety and urged the community to continue providing information to assist in the fight against criminality.

Three suspects, identified as Chinedu David (29), Ezeagwu Chukwuma (38), and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi (45), were arrested during the operation. Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani announced that the suspects were apprehended Saturday night while transporting the contraband in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.

The truck and the items, which included dozens of sacks of military uniforms and cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs, were taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests the military gear was destined for the South-East region of Nigeria. Investigators are working to identify the source, owner, and intended recipients of the goods. They are also examining the level of involvement of the suspects and tracking potential co-conspirators.

While CP Tijani assured Lagos residents that the discovery poses no immediate security threat to the state as the items were being moved elsewhere, he expressed concern regarding the recovery due to historical connections between criminal organizations and the use of military-style uniforms. A police source confirmed that the truck’s driver and assistant were the first suspects detained, followed by two additional suspects who later came to a Surulere police station claiming ownership of the seized items.
