Many activists in the country, still reeling from a civil war barely 13 years ago, express discontent over the substantial expenditure on a football tournament.
Conversely, supporters of President Alassane Ouattara view this investment as a forward-looking move, emphasizing the potential long-term benefits.
On the downside, the purported one billion dollars spent on organizing the tournament was sourced from the $3.5 billion loan secured by the country from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in April of the previous year.
The allocated $1 billion was utilized to construct four new stadiums and renovate two existing ones in preparation for the tournament. Additionally, the funds were employed to upgrade airports, roads, hospitals, and hotels.
This infrastructural development primarily occurred in the designated cities for the tournament, namely: Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
Francois Amichia, a former sports minister now serving as a parliament member in Ivory Coast, emphasized that the decision to host the Nations Cup was not solely driven by financial gains but aimed at repositioning the country.
The investment is seen as a strategic move to enhance safety standards in infrastructure and optimize the utilization of office space within the CBN. The action plan, prompted by various factors, including the need for alignment with the bank’s objectives, involves relocating 1,533 staff to other CBN facilities in Abuja, Lagos, and understaffed branches.
The current overcrowding issue at the CBN’s Head Office, surpassing the optimal capacity, raises concerns about safety, health risks, and impedes efficient emergency evacuation. The initiative aims to address these challenges while promoting productivity and collaboration through optimized workspace utilization.

Reflecting on the grueling economics of the trade, Franklin stated: “Music is the riskiest business I’ve ever done. You need ₦100m to promote one song. Even if TikTok carries it, you still need money to keep it on the charts because people have short attention spans, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get your money back.”
