The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this information during an inspection of the Abuja-Kaduna section, accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy, Wale Edun. The new timeline is a result of an agreement reached with the contractor, Julius Berger Construction Company. While the initial commitment was to complete the road this year, the focus has now shifted to ensuring completion within the next two years.
Former Minister of State, Works and Housing, Umar El-Yakub, had earlier mentioned the finalization of the Kaduna-Abuja highway and Zaria-Kano road by early 2023 to minimize inconvenience for road users. In April 2023, former Minister Babatunde Fashola acknowledged that the previous administration faced challenges in fulfilling its promise due to security issues in 2022 and the relocation of communities along the Zaria segment of the 265km road project. Despite the initial plan for completion, the project extended into Fashola’s tenure, with only the Kaduna to Zaria section finished.
Umahi attributed the delay to a lack of funds but assured the government’s commitment to completing the road on schedule. He mentioned the approval of the N17 billion payment and assured that funding would no longer be an issue. The former governor of Ebonyi revealed that Julius Berger committed to finishing 15 kilometers per month, leading to the adjustment in the completion timeline to 24 months.
In his statement, Edun emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to promptly completing the road, recognizing its importance in revitalizing and stabilizing the nation’s economy. Infrastructure holds immense significance for the administration and plays a vital role in reducing food prices through efficient transportation and the smooth movement of agricultural products. The military immediately expanded its search toward the Aco Estate and Angwan Sayawa axis, deploying reinforcements to seal off potential escape routes. The operation pressed forward on Wednesday, September 2, culminating in troops intercepting and arresting two suspected gang members near Gaube village in the Kuje Area Council. Alongside the arrests, soldiers recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Security forces are maintaining ongoing clearance and tracking patrols across neighboring communities to hunt down the remaining members of the syndicate.
