Following the incident, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, visited the scene and ordered the deployment of additional personnel and resources to bolster the search-and-rescue mission. Law enforcement authorities have emphasized that they are intensifying efforts to ensure the victims are rescued unhurt and that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Details of the Attack The Katsina State Police Command provided a formal account of the incident:

  • The attack took place at approximately 11:00 a.m. on May 30, 2026, along the Karaduwa-Matazu Road in Matazu LGA.

  • Armed individuals intercepted a red Peugeot 406 saloon carrying the victims.

  • The driver, identified as Abdullahi Sa’id, was shot in the right arm during the assault but was later secured and evacuated for medical care by the Divisional Police Officer and responding operatives.

  • Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.) and his wife, Amina Abdullahi, were taken by the attackers to an undisclosed location before security forces could arrive.

  • The couple had been traveling from Abuja to Katsina to observe the Eid al-Kabir celebration when their vehicle was intercepted.
