Speaking in Abuja on Friday, the lawmaker conveyed optimism that the bill would gain approval when Senators resume legislative sessions after the new year break. Despite government efforts to address insecurity, Nwoko highlighted that the ongoing mass killings, abductions, and attacks necessitated empowering civilians to protect themselves.
Referring to the violent attacks in Plateau communities, where over 200 people were killed on the eve of Christmas, Nwoko termed it a ‘disturbing moment.’ The proposed bill is set to be introduced and discussed upon Senators’ return from recess, as Nwoko stressed the urgency of addressing this pressing issue.
He stated, “Allowing law-abiding citizens to possess firearms could potentially provide a sense of security and a means to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.” Nwoko emphasized that this move comes with responsibility, including stringent regulations and comprehensive training on the proper use of firearms.
